    The Shanghai Institute of Biological Products (SIBP), part of the China National Biotec Corporation (CNBC), was founded in 1949 as a large state-owned hi-tech enterprise engaged in the research and development, production and marketing of biological products.
    SIBP was One of the first institutions granted independent import and export authority by the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade and is an important research and production base for biological products. SIBP has a strong technical team of more than 1,100 professionals and technicians. The institute has five research laboratories carrying out research and development on new products in cellular and molecular biology, microbiology and immunology, hematology, bacteriology and epidemiology. SIBP has produced nearly 100 achievements in science and technology since 1979 when the Chinese government first instituted the policy of reform and opening up, including 30 which won awards for progress in science and technology from the State Science and Technology Commission, Ministry of Health and the Shanghai municipal government.
    Interferon- (x m, jointly developed with the Virology Institute of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine in the late 1980s, was the first recombinant DNA medical product for clinical use to be created and put into production in China. As a National Class I new drug, it won a State Grade I Award for Science and Technology in 1993. Later, interferon-r was developed, which won a State Grade II Award for Science and Technology. SIBP is authorized to confer master's degrees in molecular biology /biochemistry and pathogenic biology and the institute serves as the Shanghai Monitoring Center for Laboratory Animals under the Ministry of Health, which is recognized by the State Technological Supervision Administration. SIBP now produces more than 200 types of biological products, including blood products, prophylactics , genetically engineered products and diagnostics.
    The institute's total annual output value reached 719 million yuan RMB in 2003. The high quality of the products produced by SIBP has won it a high reputation both at home and abroad. SIBP has the largest production line for blood products made with the most advanced equipmertt in China and has earned a "GMP Certificate for Blood Products" from the State Food and Drug Administration of China. The institute's blood products include human albumin and immunoglobulins and the technology and production scale rank among the most advanced in the world. Construction of the new facility for vaccine production was approved by the Chinese government in the early 1990s and required a total investment of more than 400 million yuan RMB, part of which came from a World Bank !oan. The hi- tech facility was built in accordance with the GMP requirements of the EU and produces varicella vaccine and influenza split vaccine, which were introduced from Japan in 1996 and 2000, respectively. The quality of the products has attained international levels by adopting the first-rate technology and equipment and have been consistently well received by centers for disease control and hospitals. The project represents a new milestone in modem vaccine production in China, one that will promote the development of immunoprophylaxis in China and benefits many generations to come.
    SIBP has established technological cooperation and trade relationships over the last 50 years with more than twenty countries and areas including the United States, Japan, and Korea.
